Obama Promotes Expanding Wireless Access
Saying tomorrow’s economy can’t thrive on yesterday’s infrastructure, President Barack Obama on Thursday promoted his five-year plan to lure new industries and jobs to the US by expanding high-speed wireless to 98 percent of the country. (Feb. 10)

@biggydx : yeah, nothing wrong with being altruistic, but not with other people’s (public) money. This is one of the fundamental economic problems – people (politicians and those on the left) are careless and overly altruistic when they spend other people’s money. Nobody is going to starve or die in cold b/c there is no internet connection, or for that matter, HBO or MTV. If it is indeed a good cause deserving of public money, why can you and like-minded folks get together and pay for this?
@tooltalk I dont think setting up a small station to broadcast broadband would be as costly as building a bridge. High-speed mobile access is a product and road access is a privilege. You obviously need to have financial stability in order to obtain a home, even though there are homeless shelters out there. But for me, I do think healthcare is a right. Its just that todays times make it seem less like that. Maybe Im just being altruistic. All Im saying is everyone should have access to internet.
@biggydx : are you saying that the gov’t should build “bridges to nowhere” to sparsely populated towns (eg, Gravina Island)? Do you think you have “rights” to mobile access, in the same way that we have the rights to road access, healthcare, housing, etc, etc?
@shm224 The problem encountered by relying on private business only is that more than likely they would rather provide hardline wireless internet instead since it would target more city and suburban clients, who they could probably charge more since there is an abundance of people in these areas. Its how UPS works in that they only ship to areas where the demand would be high for their services. Even if certain people lived in places with low demand, they would still need internet access.
@biggydx : Well, that really wasn’t what I wanted to find out. My point was to question the administration’s true motive and wisdom behind the “build it, they will come” mentality. If there’s demand for such services, private sector can better determine how to do this. And if the wireless mobile industry is any indication (AT&T’s spending billions every year just to keep up with the demand from iPhone users) there is no sign that they aren’t spending enough or changing fast enough.
I get that there are political divisions here, but how can people on the internet criticize the government for improving the internet?
the most arrogant unqualified piece of shit to ever come down the pike…….this is what we ALL are most worried about……that Billy-Bob in Possumnuts Oklahoma has wireless internet so he can watch porn with the sheep in the barn….. his only true position is……….fuck you, I’m ME
Obama, I don’t what you’re doing about these gas frackers in Washington, but I am begging you to take control of this situation before these parasites destroy all the drinking water in this country. People are setting their water on fire right from their tap and it’s not even being reported. These companies are being allowed to dump shitloads of toxic chemicals right in the Deleware river, which provides drinking water for millions of people. How do we cook food in methane? Do something!
Moving too fast for me. Jumping around all over the place with all these prepared speeches on various topics. This guy can dance. So far this month he has alienated Israel (again), Egypt, you and me. This fool is out of control and has surrounded himself with advisers in every category who are anti-American. We gotta throw these bums out.
@fruitsofherwomb I don’t think any of it should be… its just another step past the FCC to control the internet and censor what they don’t want us to see. Anyone can see this a mile away. They need to keep their nose out of business and stick to what they are not good at anyway…
@5T4RSCREAM Then use internet that isn’t ‘government funded’
@jabberwolf Giving big rich companies more tax breaks, while they do nothing to expand broadband? Sounds good bro.
@shm224 I’m guessing he means that you wouldn’t have to be at a local Wi-Fi hotspot since the WiMAX can output a signal of 70Mbit/s within 30 miles, rather than only a few hundred feet like most Wi-Fi set ups. I guess I would be a good thing if you lived in a place that was far from a hotspot and had very limited Internet access (ie Dial-up). By the way, yes, I did get this from Wikipedia.
@Mahaveez : can you be more specific? I live and go to school in NYC – if I want to get online and use resources from my school, all I gotta do is to get on one of those thousands free-wifi access points at Starbucks or McDonalds (or iPhone tether if I can’t find any). So in what ways is it transforming expectations? Are you saying that wimax (or better access) enhances your education?
Obama says “We need to invest…” Translation: “We need to borrow more money and give it to political cronies so they can be enriched at the expense of the taxpayer.” No thanks.
Wow some of you posters are *absolute* morons. Do you folks know what rural electrification was in the 30s? Think of giving rural people wireless access, more information. “Government control.” Do a Google search. Kiss my fuckin ass.
Access OK. But also there’s the affordibility.
Obama said these words at Northern Michigan University, where I’m a student. He was speaking specifically about the example set by the university’s WiMAX system. It’s helped a lot of students living off campus and made it easier to work or do anything online, anywhere. I used to think it was trivial, but the access really transforms expectations of professors and peers. Plus the network is near-ready for business and first-response access.
This is getting more people on the ‘highway!’
Does Obama not get it STILL!?!?!?
Government helping expand wireless internet will cost 10X as much as simply giving tax breaks to companies to do the same thing.
OBAMA – TAKE AN ECON. COURSE – FOR GODS SAKE MAN !!!!
Not about faster internet… your right… its about government control over the internet.
We all know, Al Gore created the internet. He told us so!!!! Now tell everyone the reason the internet was created and when!!! You were in grade school. It took corporations to commercials the internet. If it were up to the government, people would only have prodigy and compuserve, aka dialup.
thats cool that people get internet but as long we dont have internet censorship
Must be so the government and pentagon don’t have to go to Korea to see internet porn from their limos and hummers on the drive around the block of the red districts.
For what? More ads, more propaganda, more made in China, and more fascism? You ruined radio, ruined TV…..
SCUMBAG…
…couldnt even side with democracy…because for the US, democracy is occupying territory.
@wtfjaftw You got all that from my one sentence comment? What the hell has Obama or Buffett done for you? Why should Buffett get an award? Obama and Holder are the dividers. Bombs are real – people in NYC know this all too well. I am all for Uniting for the America we can be proud of, but If you are saying Socialism is more important than getting our values, morals, and Constitutional principles in order I would disagree.
@357lenny Lol obama isn’t a socialist, he a facist. He is the puppet for the elite who control the world through a shadow empire. Your definition of Obama has been painted by the corporate elite that elected him into office. Your definition of left and right is flawed and put into place intentionally to the divide people. We must unite to fight off the threat against our liberties not some guy in the middle of nowhere that might bomb us.
Giving metals to war criminals and nazis is very in fashion . Surprised he didn’t give himself one .
Damn Fat ALbert received a medal!
Mr. Hussein, where is your birth cerificate?
Award to Warren Buffett? Come on Obama – The American people need an award for putting up with your Socialist/Muslim tactics.
WTF ..Julian Assange DID’NT GET ONE? DARN!
@InvictusX100 yes, he so modest (LOL).
Huh? Daddy Bush is still alive?!…wow he looks 100!(That must mean Barbara Bush looks like a mummy now)

Creepy
@peltecs Even Obama thought his getting the Peace Prize was inappropriate. Don’t be stupid.
How many hours did Maya Angelou speak?
You should award it to your Goon TSA agents Obama. They are murdering the 4th Amendment….I mean, you got the award for Peace….why not?
lolz…
